Abstract
Canola (Brassica napus L.) is a member of the cruciferous family that grows annually and its seeds are mainly used to produce oil, which is the third most important source of edible oil after soybean and palm. In this research, the improvement effect of pretreatment of vitamin C and hydroquinone on canola under accelerated aging and the developmental and biochemical characteristics of seedlings obtained from aged canola including morphological traits, germination indices were investigated. Seed pretreatment with antioxidant compounds reduced the damage caused by decay, improved the quality of rapeseed and seedlings, and increased the growth indicators. The colorimetric characteristics of the extracts of pre-treated old rape seed seedlings showed changes in the colorimetric characteristics of the extracts under vitamin C and hydroquinone pretreatment. Seed pretreatment with antioxidant compounds reduced the damage caused by decay, improved the quality of canola and seedlings, and accelerated the changes in the phytochemical compounds of canola during aging. The reduction of seed germination and the weakness of the morphometric characteristics of the seedlings obtained from aged seeds indicate the phytochemical changes of the seeds during the aging process. Investigation on potential of canola seed under accelerated aging showed that although aging reduced the germination power of the seeds by 70%, the seedlings obtained from the seeds with the ability to grow showed phytochemical changes in the metabolic pathways.
